Nottingham: Guide
Nottingham on kaupunki Nottinghamshiren kreivikunnan alueella Keski-Englannissa Yhdistynyt kuningaskunta|Isossa-Britanniassa. Kaupunki on ollut hallinnoltaan yhden tason hallintoyksikkö vuodesta 1998. Asukasluku on noin 274 000.
Historia
Saksit perustivat Trentjoen varressa sijaitsevan kaupungin 600-luvulla. 800-luku|800-luvulla alueen valloittivat tanskalaiset viikingit. Aluetta kutsuttiin muun muassa nimillä Tigguo Cobauc ("House of Caves") ja Snottingaham. Vilhelm Valloittaja määräsi Hastingsin taistelun jälkeen jokivarteen rakennettavaksi linnoituksen, jonka ympärille asutus edelleen laajentui.
Legenda Robin Hoodista, 1100-luvulla eläneestä lainsuojattomasta, yhdistetään kiinteästi Nottinghamiin ja sen ympäristöön, etenkin kaupungista pohjoiseen sijaitsevaan Sherwoodin metsään.
Englannin sisällissota alkoi kaupungista 1642, kun Kaarle I (Englanti)| Kaarle I valitsi Nottinghamin linnan taisteluiden näyttämöksi.
Nottingham kasvoi etenkin 1700-luvulla teollistuminen|teollisen kasvun myötä. Kaupungin pääartikkeliksi muodostui pitsi, jota valmistettiin paikallisten suunnittelijoiden kehittämillä koneilla. Nottinghamin pitsistä tuli ennen pitkää maailmanlaajuisestikin tunnettu käsite.
Nottinghamista ovat kotoisin jalkapalloseurat Nottingham Forest, joka pelaa tällä hetkellä Englannin ykkösliigassa, ja Notts County, joka pelaa tällä hetkellä kakkosliigassa.
