Liverpool: Guide
Liverpool on kaupunki Luoteis-Englanti|Englannissa Yhdistynyt kuningaskunta|Isossa-Britanniassa, Merseysiden alueella (oli ennen osa Lancashiren kreivikuntaa). Liverpoolissa asuu noin 441 000 asukasta (2002), ja esikaupunkeineen 1,4 miljoonaa asukasta.
Historia
Liverpool perustettiin vuonna 1207, mutta sen orjakauppaan ja amerikkalaiseen tuontiin perustuva vauraus alkoi 1700-luku|1700-luvulla. Orjakauppa oli muutenkin vireää Liverpoolissa 1700-luvun lopussa.
Teollisuus
Mersey-joki|Mersey-joen suussa sijaitseva Liverpool kuuluu Ison-Britannian tärkeimpiin satamakaupunkeihin. Liverpoolissa on Ison-Britannian toiseksi suurin telakka. Liverpoolin satama vie koneita ja teksiilejä, tuo puuvillaa ja viljaa. Liverpoolissa on paljon vireää kemian-, elintarvike- ja terästeollisuutta.
Liverpoolin yliopisto perustettiin 1903.
Nähtävyyksiä
Liverpool tunnetaan nykyään ensi sijassa The Beatlesin sekä Everton FC ja Liverpool FC -jalkapallojoukkueiden kotikaupunkina.
Kuuluisia rakennuksia ovat muun muassa gotiikka|goottilainen katedraali vuodelta 1931, moderni roomalaiskatolinen Metropolitan Cathedral (rakennettu 1967) sekä Saint George's Hall, joka rakennettiin vuosina 1839 - 1854.

Murre
Liverpoolin murre tunnetaan nimellä scouse. Sana juontaa juurensa samannimisestä muhennoksesta. Vastaavasti liverpoolilainen on scouser. Scouse-murteelle tyypillisiin piirteisiin kuuluu esimerkiksi kovan k-äänteen ääntäminen "kurkku-h" -äänteenä hollannin g-kirjaimen tapaan.
