Glasgow: Guide
Glasgow (Skotlannin suurin kaupunki Clyde-joen varrella Yhdistynyt kuningaskunta|Britanniassa. Kaupunki kehittyi Pyhä Mungo|Pyhän Mungon 500-luku|500-luvulla perustaman kirkko|kirkon ympärille. Glasgow sai kaupunginoikeudet vuonna 1178. Vuonna 2001 Glasgow'n kaupungissa oli 629 501 asukasta ja koko Suur-Glasgow'n alueella asukkaita oli yhteensä noin 1,2 miljoonaa. Kaupunki on tunnettu ulkopaikkakuntalaisille vaikeaselkoisesta murre|murteestaan, joka juontuu skotin kieli|skotin kielestä.
Glasgow'ssa on paljon teräs- ja rautateollisuutta sekä telakka|telakoita. Kaupungissa on kaksi lentoasemaa, joista erityisesti Glasgow International Airport (GLA) on kansainvälisesti tärkeä. Glasgow'ssa on myös runsaasti merkittäviä skotlantilaisia yrityksiä ja se onkin yksi Britannian tärkeistä taloudellisista keskuksista.
Vuonna 1451 perustettiin Glasgow'n yliopisto, joka on Skotlannin toiseksi vanhin ja Yhdistyneen kuningaskunnan neljänneksi vanhin. Se kuuluu Britannian parhaimmistoon.
Vuonna 1990 Glasgow valittiin Eurooppa|Euroopan Euroopan kulttuuripääkaupunki|kulttuuripääkaupungiksi. Kaupungissa onkin runsaasti museoita, teattereita, kulttuuritapahtumia ja arkkitehtuuria, tunnetuimpina näistä St. Mungon gotiikka|goottilaistyylinen katedraali sekä Kelvingrove Art Gallery. Viimeeksi mainittu avasi ovensa suurten, kolme vuotta kestäneiden kunnostustöiden jälkeen heinäkuussa 2006.
Glasgow'lla on pitkä urheiluhistoria, siellä mm. järjestettiin maailman ensimmäinen kansainvälinen jalkapallo-ottelu vuonna 1872. Kaupunki toimii myös kotipaikkana Skotlannin Valioliigassa pelaaville Celtic FC:lle ja Rangers FC:lle, joiden kohtaamiset aiheuttavat kaupungissa ajoittain myös mellakointia.
