Coventry: Guide
Coventry on kaupunki West Midlandsin kreivikunnassa Englanti|Englannissa. Coventryn kaupunkialueen (metropolitan borough) asukasluku on 304 746 (2002 arvio). Se on siis Englannin yhdeksänneksi suurin kaupunki.
Coventry on ennen kaikkea autojen ja moottoripyörien kaupunki. Alan teollisuutta on ollut alueella jo vuodesta 1896. Alkaen nykyisin tuntemattomista nimistä kuten Coventry Motette ja Great Horseless Carriage Co., jatkuen tutummilla nimillä Daimler ja Triumph, kaupungin teollisuushistoria on automerkkien paraatia. Peugeot'llakin on kaupungissa tehdas. Kuuluisat Lontoon taksit tehdään Coventryssä, ja siellä on myös Jaguarin pääkonttori ja yksi tehtaista. 1970- ja 1980-luvulla autoteollisuudella meni huonosti ja Coventryssä oli työttömyysprosentti pahimmillaan yli 20 %. Viime vuosina Coventry on toipunut lamasta kun uudet teollisuudenalat asettuvat kaupunkiin.
Coventryssä on kaksi yliopistoa, Coventry University, jolla on keskellä kaupunkia kampus, sekä University of Warwick, jolla on laaja kampus on noin viisi kilometriä kaupungin keskustasta etelän Warwickshireen päin. University of Warwick on yksi viidestä englantilaisyliopistosta, jota ei ole koskaan arvosteltu kärkikymmenikön ulkopuolelle opetuksen laadussa ja tutkimuksessa.
Luonnollisesti Coventryn suurin nähtävyys on Liikennemuseo (Coventry Transport Museum).
Toisessa maailmansodassa Taistelu Britanniasta|Saksa pommitti Coventryä samoin kuin muita suuria teollisuuskaupunkeja. Mm. katedraali romuttui täysin. Uusi katedraali avattiin 1962 vanhan raunioiden viereen. Coventry oli yksi Englannin pahimmin tuhoutuneista kaupungeista.
