Birmingham on Englanti|Englannin ja Yhdistynyt kuningaskunta|Yhdistyneen kuningaskunnan toiseksi suurin kaupunki, joka sijaitsee West Midlandsin Englannin kreivikunnat|kreivikunnassa Englannin keskiosassa. Itse kaupungissa on asukkaita vajaa miljoona ja ympäröivällä metropolialueella yhteensä noin 2,3 miljoonaa.
Historia
Kaupunki oli Englannin teollinen vallankumous|teollisen vallankumouksen tärkeitä keskuksia, ja se kasvoi tuolloin nopeasti: esimerkiksi vuonna 1800 asukkaita oli 75 000 ja vuoteen 1900 mennessä jo 650 000.
Toinen maailmansota|Toisen maailmansodan aikana Birmingham oli saksalaisten raskaan pommituksen kohteena, mistä seurasi inhimillisten tappioiden lisäksi useiden kaupungin historiallisesti arvokkaiden rakennusten tuhoutuminen. Tuhoa jatkoi 1970-luku|1970-luvun kunnallishallinto, joka rakensi monikaistaisen kehätien keskustan ympäri (osittain maan alle, osittain päälle), purkaen surutta alle jääneet korttelit. Äkkiä iskeneen laman takia kestikin liki 30 vuotta, ennen kuin Queens Roadin reunamille jääneet rampakorttelit saatiin siedettävään kuntoon. Viimeinen suuri rakennuskohde oli Bulls Ring -ostoskeskuksen uudelleenrakennus vuosina 2001–2003. Näiden remonttien jälkeen Birminghamin keskustaa pidetään Britannian toiseksi parhaana shoppailualueena Länsi-Lontoon jälkeen.
1900-luku|1900-luvulla metalli- ym. teollisuuden alamäen seurauksena Birminghamin talous ja myös maine jossain määrin kärsivät. Myöhemmin kaupungissa on pyritty kasvojenkohotukseen mm. uudistamalla keskustan alueita, mikä onkin elävöittänyt kulttuurielämää ja turismia. Erityisesti keskustassa kulkevien kanavien varsia on valaistu ja kivetty uudelleen, ja vanhoihin tyhjiin teollisuus- ja varastorakennuksiin on houkuteltu kulttuurilaitoksia ja ravintoloita. Broad Street on yöelämän keskus pubeineen ja yökerhoineen.
Birminghamin yliopisto perustettiin vuonna 1900.
Väestö
Nykyään kaupunki tunnettaan monikulttuurisuudestaan: asukkaista vajaalla kolmanneksella on siirtolaistausta. Edustettuna on paljon erityisesti Intiasta, Pakistanista, Karibianmeri|Karibianmeren alueelta ja Afrikka|Afrikasta peräisin olevia kansallisuuksia. Intialaisten dominoimissa kaupunginosissa on helppo unohtaa olevansa Euroopassa. Ns. "intialainen ruoka" on paljolti kehittynyt juuri Keski-Englannin teollisuuskaupungeissa. Birminghamin erikoisuus tällä saralla on Balti, pohjoisintialaisen peltisen ruoanvalmistusastian mukaan nimetty ruokalajien joukko. Balti Triangle on intialaisravintoloiden keskittymä laitakaupungilla. Keskustan liepeillä on myös Chinese quarters, kiinalaiskorttelit etnisine ruokakauppoineen ja ravintoloineen.
Nähtävyydet
Eräs nähtävyys ovat lukuisat kanaalit, joita on Birminghamissa enemmän kuin Venetsiassa, tosin laajemmalle alueelle levittäytyneenä. Kanaaleita pitkin kuljetettiin tavaraa vielä 1960-luku|1960-luvulla muun muassa Cadburyn suklaatehtaalle. Niinpä kanavanvarret ovat edelleen enimmäkseen tehtaiden takapihoja ja varastoalueita.
Urheilu
Kaupungissa on kaksi Englannin Valioliigan jalkapallojoukkuetta: Aston Villa FC ja Birmingham City FC (huom. Birmingham City FC putosi kaudeksi 2006-2007 Englannin mestaruussarjaan). Kannattajien väliset yhteenotot ovat välillä olleet niin väkivaltaisia, että joukkueiden väreihin (Birmingam Cityn sininen ja valkoinen, Aston Villan vaaleansininen ja viininpunainen) pukeutuneena ei juuri pääse keskustan pubeihin.
Musiikki
Birmingham tunnetaan monien kuuluisien yhtyeiden synnyinsijana, joista kuuluisimmat ovat Black Sabbath, Duran Duran ja Judas Priest.
Politiikka
Birminghamin kaupunginvaltuustossa niukka enemmistö on "kolmannella puolueella" eli liberaalidemokraattinen puolue (UK)|liberaalidemokraateilla.
