Izmir: Guide
İzmir (kreikkalaiselta nimeltään Smyrna), on Turkki|Turkin kolmanneksi suurin kaupunki ja maan toiseksi suurin satama. Asukkaita kaupungissa on 2 409 000 (vuonna 2000). İzmir sijaitsee Egeanmeri|Egeanmeren rannalla İzmirinlahden rannalla. Se on myös İzmirin läänin pääkaupunki.
Vuonna 1922 Turkin armeija Kemal Atatürk|Mustafa Kemalin johdolla syyllistyi Smyrnassa armenialaisten vainoon. Vainon päätteeksi armeija 13. syyskuuta 1922 sytytti kaupungin kreikkalais- ja armenialaiskaupunginosat palamaan. Vainoissa ja tuhopoltossa sai surmansa noin 30 000 kaupunkilaista. Tuhopoltosta selvinneet kreikkalaiset ja armenialaiset muuttivat pois kaupungista, mikä teki siitä etnisesti lähes puhtaasti turkkilaisen.
Smyrnassa sijaitsi Kristinusko|alkukristillinen seurakunta, joka oli yksi Johanneksen ilmestys|Ilmestyskirjan seitsemästä seurakunnasta.
