Wuppertal: Guide
Wuppertal on kaupunki Saksassa, Nordrhein-Westfalenin osavaltiossa, Wupperjoen varrella Ruhrin alueelta etelään. Kaupungissa on 376 700 asukasta (1999).
Wuppertal on merkittävä teollisuuskaupunki, jossa on tekstiili-, metalli-, kemikaali-, kumi-, ajoneuvo- ja painoteollisuutta.
Kaupunki muodostettiin 1929 liittämällä yhteen Barmen, Elberfeld, Vohwinkel, Ronsdorf, Cronenberg ja muita pienempiä kaupunkeja. Kaupungin nimi oli aluksi Barmen-Elberfeld, mutta vuodesta 1930 Wuppertal. Toisen maailmansodan aikana noin 40 % kaupungista tuhoutui pommituksissa. Säilyneitä alueita ovat Ölberg, yksi Saksan suurimmista työläiskortteleista ja Briller Viertel, porvarien asuinalue. Wuppertalissa on edelleen 4500 kansallisiksi muistomerkeiksi luokiteltua rakennusta klassismin, Art Nouveau- ja Bauhaus-tyylikausilta. Merkittävin vuosisadan vaihteen muistomerkki on 1900 avattu Wuppertalin Stadthalle, konserttitalo.
Eräs erikoisuus on Wuppertaler Schwebebahn, 1901 avattu riippuva yksiraiteinen juna . Kiskot ovat 8 m kadun yllä.
