Münster: Guide

Münster on kaupunki Saksassa, Nordrhein-Westfalenin osavaltion pohjoisosassa. Sitä pidetään Westfalenin alueen kulttuurikeskuksena. Kaupungin väkiluku on 269 105 (30.06.2003).

Kaupungin nimi tulee latinan luostaria tarkoittavasta sanasta monasterium, joka viittaa Kaarle Suuri|Kaarle Suuren vuonna 793 perustamaan Münsterin hiippakuntaan. Keskiajalla Münster oli yksi hansaliiton johtavia jäseniä. Vuonna 1534 anabaptistit kapinoivat Münsterin kapinassa osana reformaatiota ja perustivat teokraattisen demokraattisen esisosialistisen valtion. Kapinaa kesti 16 kuukautta, ennen kuin kaupunki vallattiin takaisin ja kapinalliset kidutettiin kuoliaiksi.

kolmikymmenvuotinen sota|Kolmikymmenvuotisen sodan päättänyt Westfalenin rauha solmittiin Münsterissa 1648 ja kaupunki määrättiin katolilaiseksi. Vuonna 1802 Preussi valloitti kaupungin Napoleonin sodat|Napoleonin sotien aikana ja siitä tuli Preussin Westfalenin provinssin pääkaupunki.

Toinen maailmansota|Toisessa maailmansodassa Münster tuhottiin lähes kokonaan pommituksissa, mutta se rakennettiin sodan jälkeen vanhaan tyyliin.
