Leverkusen: Guide



Leverkusen on kaupunki Saksassa, Nordrhein-Westfalenin osavaltiossa, Ruhrin itärannalla, puolivälissä Kölniä ja Düsseldorfia. Kaupungin asukasluku on 162 300 (1999). Sen suomalainen ystävyyskaupunki on Oulu.

Leverkusen syntyi Ruhrin alue|Reinin–Ruhrin alueen taloudellisen kasvun myötä. Se oli maaseutua 1800-luvulle asti. Kaupunki perustettiin vuonna 1930 yhdistämällä joukko kyliä: Wiesdorf, Opladen, Schlebusch, Steinbüchel, Rheindorf ja Bergisch-Neukirchen.

Apteekkari Carl Leverkus perusti 1860 pieneen jo 1100-luku|1100-luvulta tunnettuun Wiesdorfin kylään väritehtaan. Bayer AG|Bayer osti tehtaan 1891. Yhtiö muutti pääkonttorinsa Wiesdorfiin 1912, ja kylästä tuli Saksan kemianteollisuuden keskus.

Leverkusen tunnetaan menestyksekkäästä jalkapallojoukkueestaan Bayer Leverkusen.
