Gotha on kaupunki Saksassa Gothan maakunnassa Thüringenin osavaltiossa. Gothassa on noin 47 000 asukasta.

Sijainti

Gotha sijaitsee Thüringer Waldin pohjoisosassa Leipzigin ja Frankfurt am Main|Frankfurtin välisten moottoritie- ja rautatieyhteyksien varrella.

Gothan naapurikunnat ovat pohjoisessa Bufleben, Goldbach (Thüringen)|Goldbach ja Remstädt, idässä Friemar, Seebergen ja Tüttleben, etelässä Emleben, Günthersleben-Wechmar ja Leinatal sekä lännessä Trügleben, Aspach (Thüringen) ja Hörselgau. Kaikki nämä kunnat kuuluvat Gothan maakuntaan.

Historia

Gotha mainitaan ensimmäisen kerran arkkipiispa Lullus|Lulluksen breviariumissa nimellä villa gotaha ("hyvä vesi"). Tämän asiakirjan perusteella perustamisvuotena pidetään vuotta 775, mutta on oletettavissa, että jo aikaisemmin paikalla on ollut asustusta. Myös arkeologiset löydöt tukevat tätä näkemystä.

Keskiajalla Gotha oli tärkeä kauppapaikka. Tärkeimpiä kauppatavaroita oli värimorsinko|värimorsingosta saatava väriaine.

1700- ja 1800-luvuilla Gothasta kehittyi luonnontieteiden ja taiteiden kaupunki. Gothaan perustettiin nykyisten saksalaisten vakuutusyhtiöiden edeltäjät Gothaer Feuerversicherungsbank ("Gothan palovakuutuspankki") vuonna 1820 ja Lebensversicherungsbank 1827.

1900-luvulla Gothasta kehittyi hyvien liikenneyhteyksien siivittämänä tärkeä konepaja-, painoteollisuus- ja maataloustuotteiden jalostuspaikkakunta. Erityisen tärkeä oli lentokoneteollisuus. Gothassa rakennettiin lentokoneita jo ennen ensimmäinen maailmansota|ensimmäistä maailmansotaa. Maailman ensimmäinen suurkaupunkiin (Lontoo) kohdistettu ilmahyökkäys toteutettiin Gothassa rakennetuilla pommikoneilla, jotka myös tunnettiin nimellä Gotha.

toinen maailmansota|Toisessa maailmansodassa Gotha välttyi suurilta tuhoilta, sillä kaupunkin komendantti tarjoutui antautumaan liittoutuneiden joukkojen lähestyessä vuonna 1945. Gotha liitettiin tuolloin Neuvostoliitto|Neuvostoliiton miehitysalueeseen.

DDR-aikana Gotha pysyi luonteeltaan teollisuuskaupunkina.
