Gelsenkirchen on kaupunki Nordrhein-Westfalenissa Saksan länsiosassa Ruhrin alueella. Kaupungin väkiluku 31. maaliskuuta 2006 oli 269 972 asukasta. Kaupungin talous on perinteisesti ollut suurelta osin kaivostoiminnan varassa, 1900-luvun alkupuolella Gelsenkirchen olikin Euroopan merkittävin hiilikaupunki. Hiilentuotannon tyrehtyminen vuosisadan loppupuolella ajoi myös kaupungin talousvaikeuksiin, ja Gelsenkirchen onkin aktiivisesti pyrkinyt etsimään uusia elinkeinoja. Hiilivoimasta toista vuosisataa eläneeseen kaupunkiin avattiinkin Saksan suurin aurinkovoimala, ja sen ohessa myös suuri aurinkopaneeleiden tuotantolaitos. Niiden myötä Gelsenkirchen pyrkiikin hiilivoiman pääkaupungista aurinkovoiman vastaavaksi, lakkautettuja hiilikaivoksia on muunnettu muun muassa kulttuurikäyttöön.
