Essen: Guide
Essen on kaupunki Nordrhein-Westfalenissa Saksassa, Ruhrjoen varrella. Se on Ruhrin alueen toiseksi suurin ja Saksan kahdeksanneksi suurin kaupunki 584 295 asukkaallaan (1.1.2006). Sen suomalainen ystävyyskaupunki on Tampere.
Essenissä on merkittävää rautateollisuutta, mm. Kruppin tehtaat ja kivihiili|kivihiilen louhintaa, mutta nykyisin niiden merkitys työllistäjänä on vähentynyt voimakkaasti.
Essen on perustettu 845, tosin se oli pitkään mitätön maaviljelyskaupunki. Hiilen ja malmin kaivuu johtivat Essenin kasvuun. Essen on Kruppin perheen kotisija. Krupp perusti kaupunkiin terästehtaan 1811. Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen kaupunki koki suuria muutoksia ja on nyt merkittävä taidekeskus, jossa sijaitsee Folkwang Museum ja taideyliopisto. Universität Duisburg-Essen syntyi, kun läheisen Duisburgin yliopisto ja Universität-Gesamthochschule Essen yhdistettiin vuoden 2003 alussa. Siinä on noin 30000 opiskelijaa, ja on näin keskikokoinen saksalainen yliopisto.
Essenin nähtävyyksiin kuuluvat Alfred Kruppin rakennuttama Villa Hügel ja Zeche und Kokerei Zollverein, 1986 suljettu hiilikaivos, joka on Bauhaus-arkkitehtuurillaan valittu UNESCOn maailmanperintökohteeksi. Tunnettu on myös RWE AG:n rakennus kaupungin keskustassa, joka on Ruhrin alueen suurin rakennus. Essenissä on 1300-luvun katedraali, jossa on keisari Otto III:n kruunu ja maailman vanhin Neitsyt Marian patsas. Vuonna 1988 valmistuneen Essenin oopperatalon suunnitteli Alvar Aalto vuonna 1963. Essenissä toimii myös jääkiekkoseura Moskitos Essen, jossa mm. Esa Tikkanen pelasi kaudella 2000-2001.
