Chemnitz (vuosina ) on kaupunki Saksassa [[Saksin vapaavaltiossa Erzgebirgen juurella. Sen asukasluku on 248 365 (31.12.2004).
Vuonna 1143 nykyisen Chemnitzin paikalla sijaitsi vanhan slaavilaisasutuksen paikalle perustettu benediktiiniläisluostari. Vuonna 1170 keisari Fredrik I Barbarossa antoi sille keisarillisen valtakunnankaupungin oikeudet. Vuonna 1307 kaupungista tuli Meissenin rajakreivin alainen. Jo keskiaikana kaupunki oli tekstiilituotannon keskus; kehitys jatkui teollisen vallankumouksen myötä ja kaupunki oli yksi Saksan suurimpia teollisuuskaupunkeja ja sai nimen "Saksin Manchester." Vuonna 1913 kaupugissa oli 320 000 asukasta, enemmän kuin nykyään.
Toisen maailmansodan aikana kaupunki tuotti lähes yksinomaan sotilasvarusteita, sitä pommitettiin raskaasti ja se tuhottiin 3. maaliskuuta 1945 lähes täysin. Itä-Saksan hallitus päätti tehdä kaupungista sosialistisen mallikaupungin. Vanhoja rakennuksia ei entisöity, vaan kaupunki rakennettiin uudelleen betonista itäsaksalaiseen tyyliin. 10. toukokuuta 1953 se nimettiin Karl Marxin kunniaksi.
Chemnitzin nähtävyyksiin kuuluvat vanha raatihuone, linnat entisillä luostarin mailla, punainen torni ja goottilainen Johanniskircheä.
Saksojen yhdistymisen myötä raskasta teollisuutta ajettiin alas ja kaupungin väkiluku on vähentynyt vuoden 1989 yli 300 000:sta yli viidelläkymmenellätuhannella.
Kaupungissa on vuonna 1836 (nimellä Königliche Gewerbschule Chemnitz) perustettu Technische Universität Chemnitz, jossa on noin 10 000 opiskelijaa. Lähimmät kansainväliset lentokentät ovat Dresden (80 km) ja Leipzig-Halle (90 km).
Chemnitzin (Karl-Marx-Stadtin) ensimmäinen ystävyyskaupunki on ollut vuodesta 1961 Tampere.
