Bochum: Guide
Bochum on kaupunki Saksassa Nordrhein-Westfalenin osavaltiossa Dortmundin ja Essenin välissä Ruhrin alueella, 394400 as. Se on merkittävä teollisuuskeskus, jossa on runsaasti etenkin metalli-, kone- ja kulkuneuvoteollisuutta. Kaupunki on myös tärkeä koulutuskeskus, jossa sijaitsee Ruhrin yliopisto (perustettu 1965), teatterikoulu ja lisäksi runsaasti tieteellisiä tutkimuslaitoksia. Kaupungissa on kaksi keskiaikaista linnaa sekä Kaivosmuseo että nostalginen Junamuseo.
Vaikka kaupunki perustettiin jo 1300-luvulla, oli kaupunki merkityksetön 1800-luvulle asti. 1800-luvulla alkoi Saksa teollistua ja Bochum kasvaa. Kasvu johtui kaupungin hiilikaivoksista ja sen mukana tulleesta terästeollisuudesta. Bochumin väkiluku kymmenkertaistui 1850-1890. Hiilikaivokset jouduttiin kuitenkin sulkemaan 1960-1973 välisenä aikana.
