Historia

Toulouse oli merkittävä kaupunki jo Rooman valtakunta|Rooman valtakunnan aikana. Sen nimi oli silloin Tolosa, ja se oli gootit|länsigoottien pääkaupunki vuosina 419–507. Toulouse oli myös itsenäinen kreivikunta vuosina 778–1271. 1700- ja 1800-luvuilla Toulousen merkitys Ranskassa väheni, koska teollinen vallankumous ei koskettanut kaupunkia. 1900-luvulla sotakalusto- ja ilmailuteollisuuden siirtäminen Toulouseen onkin herättänyt kaupungin takaisin eloon. Onkin ironista, että Toulousen entinen suurin heikkous onkin osoittautunut sen suurimmaksi vahvuudeksi, koska teollisen vallankumouksen aiheuttamia ympäristötuhoja ja sosioekonomista uudelleenrakentamista ei ole tapahtunut.

Hyötyen asemastaan Euroopan ilmailuteollisuuden pääkaupunkina ja ihmisten muuttovirrasta teollisuusalueilta lämpimämmille ja puhtaamille alueille Toulousen väkiluku onkin kasvanut 1960 - 2000 lukujen aikana 50 prosentilla, kun Ranskan yhteisväkiluku on kasvanut vain 30 prosenttia. Ilmailu- ja biotekniikkateollisuuden hyvien näkymien vuoksi onkin odotettavaa, että kaupungin kasvaminen vielä jatkuu.

Talous

Toulousessa on tekstiili-, elintarvike- ja kemianteollisuutta. Toulouse on Ranskan lentokoneteollisuuden keskus. Kaupungissa toimii ilmailualan Ecole Superior "Sup-Aero". Airbus|Airbus Industrie'n suurin tehdas toimii kaupungissa. Eurooppalaisen ilmailu-, avaruus- ja puolustusvälineyrityksen EADSin satelliittitehdas EADS Astrium ja ranskalainen satelliittitehdas Alcatel Space sijaitsevat kaupungissa. Siellä sijaitsee Ranskan avaruusjärjestön (CNES) teknologiakeskus.

Kulttuuri

Toulousessa on myös vuonna 1229 perustettu yliopisto sekä arvostettu taidemuseo. Huomattava määrä kirkkoja, esimerkiksi 1000-luvulla perustettu basilika Saint Sernin. Hieno 1700-luvulta peräisin oleva kaupungintalo Le Capitole, jossa myös harjoitetaan teatteritoimintaa. Toulousesta ovat kotoisin myös monet suositut musiikkiyhtyeet, kuten nuorison keskuudessa varsin suosittu Zebda.
