Saint-Germain-en-Laye: Guide

Saint-Germain-en-Laye on Ranska|ranskalainen kaupunki, joka sijaitsee Île-de-Francen alueella, Yvelinesin departementissa. Kaupunki nimettiin Ranskan suuri vallankumous|Ranskan suuren vallankumouksen aikana "La Montagne du Bon Air'ksi".

Kunta on pinta-alaltaan departementtinsa suurin. Kaupunkia peittävät runsaat metsät. Sen alueella Seinejoki mutkittelee voimakkaasti. Alueen ylänkömaisemaa hallitsee Seinen lisäksi Pariisin kaupungin läheisyys.

Kunnan rajanaapureita ovat: idässä Le Pecq, Le Mesnil-le-Roi ja Maisons-Laffitte, pohjoisessa Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, lännessä Achères, Poissy ja Chambourcy sekä etelässä Fourqueux, Mareil-Marly ja Le Port-Marly.

Historia

Vuonna 1124: Kuningas Ludvig VI (Ranska)|Ludvig VI Lihava rakennutti ensimmäisen linnakkeen;
1400-luku: Henrik II (Ranska)|Henrik II rakennutti linnan uudelleen, nykyiseen asuunsa;
Kaupunki toimi kuninkaallisena residenssikaupunkina aina vuoteen 1689, jolloin Ludvig XIV (Ranska)|Aurinkokuningas lopullisesti jätti kaupungin siirtyessään Versailles'hin;
Vuonna 1837: Avattiin Ranskan ensimmäinen rautatieyhteys Pariisin Saint-Lazaren aseman ja Saint-Germain-en-Layen välille.
Vuosina 1940–1944: Saksalaisten päämaja sijaitsi kaupungin linnassa. Linnassa myös suunniteltiin niin kutsuttu operaatio Seelöwe, jonka tavoitteena oli maihinnousu Britanniaan.
