Nantes: Guide

Nantes on kaupunki Länsi-Ranskassa Atlantin valtameri|Atlantin rannikon tuntumassa Loire (joki)|Loire-joen suusta 55 kilometriä yläjuoksuun. Se on Pays de la Loiren alueen pääkaupunki ja Loire-Atlantiquen departementti|departementin prefektuuri (pääkaupunki) sekä lisäksi historiallisen Bretagnen provinssin pääkaupunki. Nantesin asukasluku oli vuoden 2004 arvion mukaan 276 200 (kaupungin pinta-ala 65,19 km²) ja metropolialueen väkiluku 711 120 vuonna 1999 (pinta-ala 2 242,6 km²). Itse kaupunki on siten väkiluvultaan Ranskan kuudenneksi suurin ja metropolialue kahdeksanneksi suurin.

Historia

Namnetit-niminen kelttiläiset|kelttiläinen heimo perusti kaupungin nykyisen Nantesin lähistölle noin vuonna 70 eaa, kunnes Julius Caesar valloitti sen vuonna 56 eaa ja antoi sille nimen Portus Namnetus. Ensimmäisen vuosituhannen aikana kaupungin valloittivat saksit noin vuonna 285, frankit noin vuonna 500, britit 500- ja 600-luvulla sekä normannit vuonna 843.

Vuonna 937 Alain Barbe-Torte, normannien karkottaman Bretagnen viimeisen kuninkaan pojanpoika, ajoi normannit pois kaupungista ja perusti Bretagnen herttuakunnan, joka pysyi itsenäisenä aina vuoteen 1532 saakka, kun se liitettiin Ranskan kuningaskuntaan. Nantes sai pitää Bretagnen parlamentin muutamia vuosia, kunnes se siirrettiin Rennesiin. Vuonna 1598 Ranskan Henri IV allekirjoitti Nantesin ediktin, joka antoi ranskan protestanteille oikeuden uskontoonsa.

Siellä avattiin omnibussijärjestelmä vuonna 1826, joka oli mahdollisesti maailman ensimmäinen julkinen liikennejärjestelmä, ja se kopioitiin nopeasti suurkaupunkeihin kuten Pariisiin, Lontooseen ja New York City|New Yorkiin. Ensimmäisen rautatieyhteyden kaupunki sai vuonna 1851, mikä toi sinne lisää teollisuutta.

Kasvavan autoliikenteen myötä 1900-luvun alussa useat Loiren suiston haarat täytettiin, sillä kaupunki sijaitsi alun perin useiden haarojen erottamien saarekkeiden alueella. Saksan joukot miehittivät Nantesin vuonna 1940. Saksalaisen päällikön murha seuraavana vuonna aiheutti 48 panttivangin teloittamisen. Englantilaiset ja amerikkalaiset koneet pommittivat kaupunkia kahdesti 1943, ja amerikkalaiset vapauttivat kaupungin natsimiehityksestä 1944. Toinen maailmansota|Toisen maailmansodan jälkeen Nantes menetti vähitellen teollisuuttaan ja sen satama siirrettiin aivan Loiren suulle Saint-Nazairen kaupunkiin. Vasta 1980-luvulla kaupunki on siirtynyt modernimpaan talouteen. Kaupungissa avattiin raitiovaunuliikenne vuonna 1985.
