Limoges: Guide

Limoges on 134 000 asukkaan kaupunki keski-Ranskassa Haute-Viennen departementti|departementissa Limousinin alueella (région), jonka pääkaupunki Limoges on. Limogesin alueella asuu yhteensä noin 250 000 asukasta. Kaupunki on kuuluisa posliinistaan.

Maantiede

Limoges sijaitsee Keski-Ranskan ylänkö|Keski-Ranskan ylängön länsilaidalla noin 150 kilometrin päässä Atlantti|Atlantin valtamerestä. Ilmasto on merellinen ja vuorten takia sademäärä on jopa 910 mm vuodessa. Kaupungin läpi virtaa Vienne-joki. Junamatka Pariisiin kestää noin kolme tuntia.

Historia

Kaupungin perustivat Välimeren ja Bretagnen rannikot yhdistävän tien sekä Lyonin (Lugdunum) ja Saintesin (Mediolanum) yhdistävän reittien risteyksessä. Kaupungissa on roomalaisten ensimmäisellä vuosisadalla rakentaman amfiteatterin sekä toisella vuosisadalla rakennetun kylpylän rauniot. 200-luvun loppupuolella asukkaat vähitellen hylkäsivät kaupungin germaanit|germaanien hyökkäysten takia.

1000-luvun alkupuolella Augustoritum oli jakaantunut kahteen osaan, kaupunkiin (cité) ja linnaan. Kaupunki tuhoutui hyökkäyksessä vuonna 1370. Keski-ajalla linnan ympärille kohosi esikaupunkeja.

Cité yhdistettiin linnan alueeseen 1792 ja kaupunki otti nimekseen Limoges. Ranskan suuri vallankumous sai Limogesissa paljon kannatusta ja vuonna 1792 Saint-Martialin luostari tuhottiin kuudessa päivässä. 1700-luvun lopulla kaupunkiin syntyi posliini- ja emaliteollisuutta. Teollisuus synnytti kaupunkiin myös Ranskan ensimmäisen ammattiyhdistysliike|ammattiyhdistysliikkeen vuonna 1895.
