Besançon on Doubsin departementti|departementin ja Franche-Comtén alueen pääkaupunki itä-Ranskassa. Vuoden 1999 väestölaskennan mukaan kaupungin asukasluku oli 117 733.
Kaupunki oli olemassa jo Pyhän saksalais-roomalaisen keisarikunnan aikana Besançonista tuli piispanistuin ja vuonna 1184 kaupungille myönnettiin autonominen asema ja vuonna 1288 kaupungin arkkipiispoille myönnettin prinssin asema keisarikunnassa. Kaupunki joutui Burgundin kreivien vaikutusvaltaan 1400-luku|1400-luvulla ja myöhemmin kaupunki siirtyi osaksi Habsburgien valtapiiriä siirtyen ensin Itävalta|Itävallan ja sittenmin Espanjan vaikutuksen alle. Osaksi Ranskaa kaupunki siirtyi Nijmegenin sopimus|Nijmegenin sopimuksessa.
Kaupungin tunnetuimpia nähtävyyksiä ovat historiallinen keskusta-alue la Boucle, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban|Vaubanin rakennuttama linnoitus, kaupungin 1100-luku|1100-luvulla rakennettu katedraali ja kardinaali Antoine Perrenot de Granvelle|Granvellen 1500-luku|1500-luvulla rakennuttama kaupunkipalatsi.
Kaupungin merkitävimmät teollisuudenalat ovat kellosepänteollisuus ja mikroteknologia.
