Arles: Guide
Arles on kaupunki Etelä-Ranskassa Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azurin alueella Bouches-du-Rhônen departementti|departementissa. Kaupungissa on 52 600 asukasta. Se sijaitsee 80 kilometriä Marseillesta länteen Rhône-joen deltan Camarguen yläpäässä.
Historia
Kreikkalaiset perustivat Arlesin kuudennella vuosisadalla eaa. roomalaiset valtasivat kaupungin. Liittouduttuaan menestyksekkääsi Julius Caesarin kanssa Pompeiusta vastaan kaupunki nousi Gallia Narbonensis -provinssin merkittimmäksi kaupungiksi. Kaupungista tuli täysin muurien ympäröimä ja sinne rakennettiin amfiteatteri, riemukaari ja sirkus.
Kaupungin kukoistus osui 300- ja 400-luvuille, jolloin Rooman keisarit käyttivät sitä sotaretkiensä päämajana. Arles oli keisari Konstantinus suuren mielikaupunki ja tämä rakensi sinne kylpylöitä, joiden rauniot ovat yhä jäljellä. Usurpaattori Konstantinus III julisti itsensä Länsi-Rooman keisariksi (407–411) ja teki Arlesista pääkaupunkinsa vuonna 408. Rooman valtakunnan loppuvaiheilla kaupunki oli tärkeä kulttuurin ja kristinuskon keskus.
700-luvun puolessa välissä Arles kärsi pahoin saraseenit|saraseenien ja frankit|frankkien välisissä taisteluissa. Vuonna 855 siitä tuli Burgundi ja Provencea hallinneen frankkilaisen Arlesin kuningaskunnan pääkaupunki. Myöhempinä vuosisatoina valtakunta sulautui pala palalta Ranskaan ja Provencen merkittävimmäksi kaupungiksi nousi Marseille. Arlesin asukasluku oli vähentynyt murto-osaan roomalaiskauden loistosta.
Modernina aikakautena Arles oli pitkään merkittävä Rhônen jokiliikenteen ansiosta. Rautateiden tulo tappoi suuren osan jokiliikenteestä ja kaupunki jäi taka-alalle. Arles lievä takapajuisuus houkutteli Vincent van Goghia, joka tuli kaupunkiin vuonna 1888 ja teki kaupungista 300 maalausta.

Pyhän Trophimuksen kirkko, entinen katedraali, on merkittävä romaaninen arkkitehtuuri|romaanisen arkkitehtuurin aikaansaannos. Kirkon pääovella olevat tuomiopäivää esittäviä patsaita pidetään romaanisen taiteen hienoimpiin lukeutuvina veistoksina.
Kaupungissa on myös merkittävä antiikin historian museo (Musée de l'Arles et de la Provence antiques), jossa on yksi maailman parhaimmista roomalaisien sarkofagien kokoelmista Rooman ulkopuolelle.
