Historia
900-1300-luvuilla Katowicen alue kuului Puolaan, sen jälkeen Böömiin, ja vuosina 1742-1922 se oli Preussin ja myöhemmin Saksan alaisuudessa. Kaupunkioikeudet se sai vuonna 1865, jolloin sen nimi oli Kattowitz. Kaupunki kehittyi 1800-luvun puolivälistä lähtien voimakkaasti kivihiilikaivosten ja raskaan teollisuuden kehityksen ansiosta. 1990-luvulla hiilikaivostoimintaan piti tehdä muutoksia, jolloin myös kaupungin taloudellinen profiili muuttui.
7. maaliskuuta 1953 Puola|Puolan kansantasavallan johto muutti Josif Stalinin kunniaksi kaupungin nimen Stalinogródiksi. Nimi Katowice palautettiin takaisin vuonna 1956.
