Mykonos: Guide
Mykonos (Kykladien saariryhmällä. Se sijaitsee Tenos|Tenoksen ja Naksos|Naksoksen välissä. Saaren pinta-ala on 85 neliökilometriä ja asukasluku noin 6 500 (2001). Suurin osa väestöstä asuu Mykonoksen kaupungissa saaren länsirannikolla. Lähinnä graniitista koostuvan saaren korkein kohta on 364 metriä. Karun saaren vesivarat ovat hyvin vähäiset, joten asukkaat joutuvat turvautumaan meriveteen, josta suola on poistettu.
Historia
Kreikkalainen mytologia|Kreikkalaisessa mytologiassa Mykonos oli Zeus|Zeuksen ja Gigantes|Giganteksen välisen taistelun tapahtumapaikka, ja saari nimettiin Apollon pojanpojan Mykonsin mukaan. Erään tarun mukaan saaren kalliot ovat Poseidonin ja Herkules|Herkuleksen surmaamien jättiläisten kivettyneitä ruumiita.
Ensimmäiset merkit asutuksesta Mykonoksella ovat 5 000 vuoden takaa Mavrospiliassa. 1000-luvun alussa eaa joonialaiset asuttivat saaren. Saari alkoi kehittyä läheisen, sillloin tiheään asutun Delos|Deloksen saaren vanavedessä. Persialaissodat|Persialaissotien aikana Mykonos oli aluksi persialaisten puolella, mutta liittyi ateenalaisiin Persian laivaston hävittyä Salamiin taistelu|Salamiin meritaistelussa 490 eaa. Aleksanteri Suuri|Aleksanteri Suuren aikaan Mykonos oli kehittynyt merenkulussa ja maataloustuotteiden viennissä, ja Rooman valtakuntaan kuuluessaan saarelaiset nauttivat suorastaan vauraudesta, kunnes 88 eaa Vähä-Aasia|Vähän-Aasian kuningas Mithridate valloitti Aigeianmeri|Aigeianmereen kuuluvat alueet.
1200-luvulla Mykonos liitettiin Naksoksen herttuakuntaan ja myöhemmin Venetsiaan kuuluneeseen Tinoksen lääniin. 1400-luvulla saari oli Venetsian alusmaana, kunnes ottomaanit valloittivat sen. Ottomaanien valtakaudella tuhansia saarelaisia kaapattiin orjiksi. Kreikan vapaussodan aikaan 1820-luvulla Mykonoksen sankarihahmoksi nousi Mando Mavrogenous, joka muun muassa rahoitti vallankumousta ja organisoi ihmiset kapinaan turkkilaisia vastaan 1822. Kreikan itsenäistymisen jälkeen saaren talous romahti ja se menetti laivastonsa. Vähitellen talous saatiin kuitenkin rakennettua ennalleen.
Matkailu
Säännöllinen höyrylaivaliikenne Mykonokselle käynnistyi ensimmäinen maailmansota|ensimmäisen maailmansodan jälkeen, mikä johti matkailun kehittymiseen. Toinen maailmansota|Toisen maailmansodan aikaan saari oli saksalaisten miehittämä, mutta turismi nousi jälleen 1950-luvulla. Nykyisin saari on yksi maailman kuuluisimmista matkailukohteista lukuisine trendikkäine illanviettopaikkoineen. Se on erityisesti kreikkalaisten ja kansainvälisten julkisuuden henkilöiden, huvijahtien omistajien ja myös seksuaalivähemmistöjen suosiossa. Asuinalueena Mykonos onkin yksi Kreikan kalleimmista.
