Torino: Guide

Torino on merkittävä teollisuuskaupunki luoteis-Italiassa. Se on Piemonten alueen ja Torinon maakunnan pääkaupunki. Torino sijaitsee Po- ja Dora Riparia -jokien yhtymäkohdassa pääasiassa Pon länsipuolella. Kaupungin keskustan maantieteellinen sijainti on noin 45° 4' pohjoista leveyttä, 7° 41' itäistä pituutta.

Torinon kunnan väkiluku oli vuoden 2001 väestönlaskennassa 865 263, mutta Torinon suurkaupunkialueella on yhteensä noin 1,5 miljoonaa asukasta. Torinon maakunta on yksi Italian suurimmista ja väkirikkaimmista, 6 830 Neliökilometri|km² ja 2 165 619 asukasta (2001).

Torino tunnetaan erityisesti Fiat-autotehtaan hallinnon ja päätuotantolaitosten sijaintipaikkana. Entinen Lingotto-teollisuusrakennus, aikoinaan maailman suurin autotehdas, toimii nykyisin kongressikeskuksena, konserttisalina, taidegalleriana ja hotellina.

Historia

Noin 400-luvulla eaa. seudulle asettuneella väestöllä oli nykyisen Torinon paikalla kaupunki Taurasia, jonka Hannibal hävitti vuonna 218 eaa.

keisari Augustukselle nimellä Julia Augusta Taurinorum. Sotilasleirin pääkadun (decumanus) paikka löytyy yhä Torinon asemakaavasta, nykyisin nimellä Via Garibaldi.

Langobardit valloittivat seudun 568 ja hallitsivat sitä ruhtinaskuntana, kunnes frankit syrjäyttivät heidät 773 ja pitivät aluetta hallussaan vuoteen 888. Tämän jälkeen valta vaihtui useasti. Ranskalainen Savoijin aatelissuku sai seudun hallintaansa 1200-luvulla ja hallitsi sitä suurimman osan ajasta Italian yhdistymiseen 1861 saakka, jolloin Savoijin sukuun kuulunut Sardinian kuningas Vittorio Emanuele II (Viktor Emanuel II) tuli Italian ensimmäiseksi kuninkaaksi. Torino oli yhdistyneen Italian ensimmäinen pääkaupunki 1861–1865.

Torinon yliopisto perustettiin 1404.

Urheilu

Torinossa toimii kaksi tunnettua jalkapalloseuraa, Juventus FC ja Torino FC.

Torino oli vuoden 2006 talviolympialaiset|2006 talviolympialaisten isäntäkaupunki.

Torinossa pidettiin 1999 kansainvälinen lähiavaruuden kappaleita käsitellyt konferenssi, jossa otettiin käyttöön Torinon asteikko. Siinä jonkin tietyn avaruuskappaleen Maahan osumisen riskitasoa kuvataan asteikolla 0–10.
