Syrakusa: Guide

Syrakusa (, , ) on kaupunki Italiassa Sisilian itärannikolla. Se on saman nimisen maakunnan pääkaupunki. Kaupungissa on 121 000 asukasta. Kaupungissa on useita historiallisia nähtävyyksiä.

Historia

Syrakusan perustivat 734 eaa helleenisiirtolaiset Korintti|Korintista. Kaupunki menestyi ja oli ajoittain voimakkain kreikkalainen kaupunki Välimerellä. 400-luku eaa|400-luvulta eaa. lähtien Syrakusaa hallitsivat tyrannit vuoteen 211 eaa. asti, joitakin keskeytyksiä lukuun ottamatta. 400-luvun lopussa Syrakusa joutui sotaan Ateenan kanssa Peloponnesolaissota|Peloponnesolaissodassa. Syrakusalaiset hankkivat Spartasta kenraalin, joko löi ateenalaiset. Vuonna 401 eaa. Syrakusasta lähti 3000 hopliittia Kyyros nuorempi|Kyyros nuoremman armeijaan.

300-luvun eaa. alussa tyranni Dionysios voitti Karthagon ja esti sitä valtaamasta koko Sisiliaa.

Ehkä kuuluisin syrakusalainen on filosofi Arkhimedes. Hänen monia keksintöjään käytettiin kaupungin puolustukseen Rooman valtakunta|roomalaisia vastaan. Syrakusa oli tuolloin Karthagon liittolainen. Kaupunki kesti kolme vuotta piiritystä, ennen kuin vallattiin 212 eaa.

Vuoden 878 valloitus merkitsi kaksivuosisataista muslimivaltaa. Vuonna 1085 normannit valloittivat Syrakusan ja 1194 Svaabian Henrik VI (Svaabia)|Henrik VI. Fredrik II:n valtakaudella Syrakusa kukoisti. Anjoun ja Aragonian välisessä kamppailussa Syrakusa liittyi Aragonian puolelle ja löi Anjoun 1298, jolloin se sai espanjalaisilta hallitsijoilta palkkiona suuret etuoikeudet.

Kaupunkiin iski seuraavina vuosisatoina kaksi tuhoisaa maanjäristystä 1542 ja 1693 ja 1729 rutto. Enemmän tuhoa aiheuttivat kuitenkin liittoutuneiden ja Saksan pommitukset 1943.
