Siena: Guide
Siena on kaupunki Keski-Italiassa Toscanan alueella, 322 metrin korkeudessa. Vuonna 2004 siellä oli 54 500 asukasta. Sienan historiallinen keskusta on Unescon maailmanperintölistalla.
Sienan asuttivat ensimmäisinä etruskit. Legendan mukaan kaupungin perusti Rooman perustaja Remuksen poika Senius. Romuluksen ja Remuksen kuvia on kaikkialla Sienassa.
Siena oli syrjässä roomalaisten kulkureiteiltä,e ikä krisntinuskokaan levinnyt sinne ennen kuin 400-luvulla. Kaupunki alkoi kukoistaa vasta Langobardit|langobardien vallattua lähiseudut. Välttääkseen bysnttilaisten hyökkäykset langobardit ohjasivat Roomasta pohjoiseen kulkevan liikenteen Sienan kautta, ja pyhiinvaeltajien virta rikastutti kaupunkia seuraavien vuosisatojen ajan.
Kaarle Suuri sai kaupungin haltuunsa 774. Toscanan kreivitär Matildan kuoltua 114 hänen valtakuntansa hajosi useihin pieniin ruhtinakuntiin. Siena julistautui itsenäiseksi 1167.
1100-luku oli Sienan kulta-aikaa, ja monet merkittävät rakennukset kuten Sienan katedraali ovat siltä vuosisadalta. Sienan yliopisto on perustettu 1203.
Palio di Siena
Sienan palio on kahdesti vuodessa käytävä hevosten laukkakilpailu, jossa kilpailevat kaupungin seitsemäntoista kaupunginosaa. Kilpailun puitteet ovat mahtavat, ja se on Sienan suosituin turistitapahtuma. Kilpailuun liittyy paljon juonittelua kaupunginosien kesken.
