Länsi-Rooman luhistuttua kaupunki toimi ostrogoottien valtakunnan pääkaupunkina, ja sitten Bysantti|Bysantin vallan, eli Ravennan eksarkaatti|Ravennan eksarkaatin keskuksena Italiassa vuoteen 750.
