Palermo: Guide
Palermo on Sisilian suurin kaupunki, Sisilian autonomisen alueen pääkaupunki ja Palermon läänin pääkaupunki. Kaupungissa on 721 000 asukasta.
Palermon perustivat roomalaisille, Bysantti|bysanttilaisille, Islam|muslimeille, Normannit|normanneille, Saksalais-roomalainen keisarikunta|Saksalais-roomalaiselle keisarikunnalle, Espanjalle ja Napolille. Palermo liitettiin Italian kuningaskuntaan vuonna 1860. Kaupungin keskusta ja satama pommitettiin käyttökelvottomaksi liittoutuneiden hyökkäyksessä vuonna 1943, eikä niitä ole vieläkään täysin korjattu.
Palermo on yksi mafian tärkeimmistä keskuksista. Kaupungin sodanjälkeinen hallitsematon kasvu ja slummiutuminen ovat pitkälle mafian aikaansaannosta. Mafia on toteuttanut siellä myös poliittisia murhia.
