Gallipoli: Guide
Gallipoli eli nykyTurkin luoteisosassa. Nimi juontuu kreikan kieli|kreikan sanasta Kallipolis ("kaunis kaupunki"). Se sijaitsee Gallipolin niemimaalla (Gelibolu Yarimadasi), ja sen länsipuolella on Aigeianmeri ja itäpuolella Dardanellien salmi.
Australiassa, Uusi-Seelanti|Uudessa-Seelannissa ja Newfoundlandissa Gallipoli tarkoittaa ympärysvallat|ympärysvaltojen Gallipolin taistelu|taistelua niemimaalla ensimmäinen maailmansota|ensimmäisessä maailmansodassa, mikä taistelu yleensä tunnetaan Yhdistyneet kuningaskunnat|Britanniassa Dardanellien taisteluna ja Turkissa Çanakkalen taisteluna. Tällä yritettiin murtautua Dardanellien lävitse ja vallata Istanbul. Taisteluissa kaatui ja haavoittui satojatuhansia sotilaita, joiden kunniaksi alueelle on perustettu kansallispuisto. Gallipolia muistetaan erityisesti Australiassa ja Uudessa-Seelannissa, joissa maihinnousun muistopäivä on yleinen vapaapäivä.
Gallipolin taistelut antoivat tärkeän sysäyksen silloin vielä tuntemattomalle armeijan komentajalle nimeltään Mustafa Kemal. Taistelujen aikana hän ylitti valtuutensa ja toimi vastoin ohjeita pysäyttääkseen ympärysvaltalaisten etenemisen ja onnistui lopulta työntämään viholliset takaisin, kun ympärysvallat vetäytyivät. Myöhemmin hän muutti nimensä Kemal Atatürkiksi ja perusti nykyisen Turkin valtion Osmanien valtakunta|Osmanien valtakunnan romahdettua.
Gallipoli ja erityisesti taistelu olivat aiheena elokuvassa Gallipoli (1981), jonka ohjasi Peter Weir ja jonka pääosassa oli Mel Gibson.
