Kapkaupunki: Guide
Kapkaupunki on yksi Etelä-Afrikka|Etelä-Afrikan kolmesta pääkaupungista (muut ovat Pretoria ja Bloemfontein). Kaupunki tunnetaan erityisesti laakeahuippuisesta Pöytävuori|Pöytävuoresta. Kapkaupungin asukasluku on noin 2,9 miljoonaa (2001).
Historiaa
Kapkaupungin perusti Hollannin Itä-Intian kauppakomppania täydennysasemaksi Indonesiaan matkalla olleille kauppalaivoille. Paikka oli tyyni merenlahti, joka suojasi laivoja voimakkailta tuulilta. Ensimmäistä eurooppalaista siirtokuntaa johti Jan van Riebeek, joka saapui alueelle 6. huhtikuuta 1652.
Nelson Mandela oli vangittuna Robben-saarella lähellä Kapkaupunkia ennen siirtoaan toiseen vankilaan. Robbenin saari kuuluu Unescon maailmanperintöluetteloon.
Urheilu
Kapkaupungissa on kolme maan pääsarjassa pelaavaa jalkapallojoukkuetta: Santos, Ajax Cape Town ja Hellenic Football Club. Myös menestyksekkäät Western Province rugby- ja krikettijoukkueet ovat Kapkaupungista.
