Zaragoza: Guide
Zaragoza on kaupunki Espanjassa, Zaragoza (maakunta)|Zaragozan maakunnan ja Aragonian itsehallintoalueen pääkaupunki. Sen asukasluku on 641 581 (1.1.2004). Väkiluvultaan se on Espanjan viidenneksi suurin kaupunki. Kaupungissa asuu puolet Espanjan aragonian kieli|aragoniaa puhuvasta väestöstä.
Zaragoza sijaitsee Koillis-Espanjassa Ebrojoen ja sen sivujokien Huervan ja Gállegon varrella keskellä suurta laaksoa. Kaupunki on keskellä Madridin, Barcelonan ja Valencian muodostamaa kolmiota. Näistä kaupungeista on Zaragozaan noin 300 km kustakin. Nuolijuna AVE yhdistää sen Madridiin ja Katalonian Lleidaan ja sieltä radan valmistuttua myös Barcelonaan. Logistisesti keskeisellä sijainnilla on ollut positiivinen vaikutus kaupungin liike-elämään. Zaragozan läheisyydessä sijaitsee myös General Motorsin tehdas, joka on yksi koko maakunnan tärkeimmistä työnantajista. Kaupungin ulkopuolella on lentotukikohta ja maavoimien kadettikoulu, jonka ensimmäinen johtaja oli Francisco Franco.
Rooman valtakunta|Roomalaiset perustivat kaupungin vuonna 24 eaa|24 eaa. nimellä Caesaraugusta viitaten Augustus|keisari Augustukseen. Roomalaisten jälkeen kaupunkia hallitsivat arabit vuosisatojen ajan. Kristitty Aragonian kuningas Alfonso El Batallador valloitti sen vuonna 1118 ja teki siitä Aragonian kuningaskunnan pääkaupungin. Pääkaupunkina Zaragoza toimi aina vuoteen 1479 asti. Valloitettu arabiväestö sulatui vähitellen kristilliseen kulttuuriin, mutta onnistui jättämään oman jälkensä esimerkiksi kaupungin arkkitehtuuriin. Zaragozan yliopisto perustettiin vuonna 1474.
Zaragoza oli keskiajalla Taifa-valtakunnan keskus. Kaupungissa on maurilainen palatsi/linnoitus, Aragónin parlamentti pitää istuntonsa. Palatsi oli myös Giuseppe Verdi|Verdin oopperan, Il Trovatore, tapahtumapaikka.
Legendan mukaan kaupungissa La Seo sijaitsee melko lähellä El Pilarin katedraalia ja aukiota.
16. joulukuuta 2004 Pariisissa päätettiin, että Zaragoza saa pitää vuoden 2008 maailmannäyttelyn, jonka aiheena tulee olemaan vesi.
Kuten asukasluvusta näkyy, Zaragoza on hyvin tiheään asuttu kaupunki.
