Vigo: Guide
Vigo on Atlantin valtameri|Atlantin rannalla Espanjan luoteisosassa Galician itsehallintoalueella sijaitseva kaupunki, joka kuuluu Pontevedra (maakunta)|Pontevedran maakuntaan. Se on Galician suurin ja Espanjan 14. suurin kaupunki. Vigossa on noin 293 000 asukasta, esikaupungit mukaan laskettuna noin 421 000 (2003).
Vigo on tärkeä teollisuuskaupunki, jossa on paljon etenkin autoteollisuutta. Koko Galician tärkein työnantaja on PSA Peugeot Citroën, jonka Vigon tehtaassa valmistettiin lähes puoli miljoonaa autoa vuonna 2003. Myös kalastus on perinteisesti ollut tärkeä elinkeino alueella: kaupunki on Euroopan tärkein kalastussatama. Vigon satama on vilkkaimmin liikennöityjen joukossa koko Espanjassa.
Ilmastollisesti Vigo sijoittuu lauhkean ja subtrooppisen vyöhykkeen rajalle: vuoden keskilämpötila on +15C ja kylmimpänäkin aikana (helmikuu) keskimääräinen vuorokauden keskilämpötila on 8 astetta. Vigoa ympäröivät vuoret (Monte Alba, Galiñeiro, Monte de Beade) muodostavat lähes yhtenäisen ketjun, joka luo kaupunkiin mikroilmaston.
Historiallisesti Vigo on hyvin nuori kaupunki, sillä vielä 1800-luvun lopussa asukkaita oli vain muutamia tuhansia. Esimerkiksi Vigon yliopisto perustettiin niinkin myöhään kuin vasta vuonna 1990. Satamakaupunkina Vigo on ollut merkittävä jo hyvin pitkään, esimerkiksi suuri osa Etelä-Amerikan emigranteista lähti matkaan juuri Vigon satamasta.
