Melbourne on Australian toiseksi suurin kaupunki ja Victoria (Australia)|Victorian osavaltion pääkaupunki. Sen asukasluku on 3 366 542 (2001). Melbourne oli Australian pääkaupunki vuodesta 1901 vuoteen 1927.
Historiaa
Kaupungin perustivat John Batmanin ja John Pascoe Fawknerin johtamat siirtolaiset 10. toukokuuta 1835. Monista muista Australian isoista kaupungeista poiketen Melbourne ei ollut alun perin vankilasiirtokunta.
Melbournessa pidettiin vuoden 1956 kesäolympialaiset.
