Cairns on kaupunki Australian koillinen|koillisosassa,
Queenslandin osavaltiossa, Korallimeri|Korallimeren rannalla, Cape Yorkin niemimaan juuressa, Barron- ja Mulgrave-jokien suistoalueella. Cairnsilla tarkoitetaan kaupungin lisäksi myös ympäröivää paikallishallintoaluetta. Kaupungissa on asukkaita n. 137 000. Se sijaitsee 1700 kilometriä läänin pääkaupungista Brisbanesta ja 2500 kilometriä maan pääkaupungista Canberrasta tai suurkaupunki Sydneystä.
Alueen pääelinkeinot ovat turismi ja maatalous (sokeriruoko|sokeriruo'on ja
ruokabanaani|banaanien viljely. Vilkkaan kansainvälisen lentokenttänsä, vehreän troopisen luontonsa sekä ennen kaikkea iso valliriutta|ison valliriutan ansiosta Cairns on suosittu turistikohde erityisesti japanilaisten ja muiden aasialaisten keskuudessa. Myös länsimaiset turistit viihtyvät alueella erityisesti talviaikaan, jolloin lämpötila pysyttelee alle 30 asteessa eikä sada niin kuin kesällä sadekausi|sadekauden aikaan, jolloin on hyvin kuumaa ja kosteaa.
Kaupungin keskusta edullisine hostelli|hostelleineen on nuorten reppumatkailijoiden suosiossa. Matkailukohteita ovat mm. sademetsäretket, köysirata Kurandan vuoristokylään, sukellusretket valliriutoille sekä sademetsäretket ympäristön kyliin.
Cairns on suhteellisen tiiviisti rakennettu johtuen siitä, että kaupunki sijaitsee tasangolla korkeitten vuorten ja meren ympäröimänä. Tosin valtaosa asutuksesta, niin kuin muuallakin Australiassa, on omakotialueita. Sadekauden ja tooppisten hirmumyrskyjen, syklonien aikana tulvat ovat ongelma keskusta ja lähellä rantaa olevilla alavilla asuinalueilla.
