Nijmegen: Guide



Nijmegen (saks. Nimwegen) on kaupunki Gelderlandissa Alankomaat|Alankomaissa lähellä Saksan rajaa. Kaupungissa on 159 556 asukasta (1.1.2006) ja kaupungialueella (stadsgewest) 276 114.

Kaupunki juhli vuonna 2005 kaksituhatvuotista olemassaoloaan. Ensimmäinen maininta on roomalaisten sotilasleiristä ensimmäiseltä vuosikymmeneltä ennen ajanlaskun alkua. Vuonna 104 keisari Trajanus antoi sille nimen Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum. Kaupunkioikeudet se sai 1230 keisari Frederik Suurelta. Nijmegen liittyi hansaliittoon 1364.

Nijmegenissa sijaitsee katolilainen yliopisto Radboud University Nijmegen.
