Leeuwarden: Guide
Leeuwarden (Alankomaiden Friisinmaan provinssin pääkaupunki sekä kunta. Kaupungin pinta-ala on 84,10 km² ja siellä on 91 693 asukasta (2005). Asukastiheys on 1 150 as/km².
Leeuwarden sai kaupunkioikeudet vuonna 1435, mutta alue on ollut asutettu jo 900-luku|900-luvulla. Koska paikka sijaitsi Middelzeen varrella se oli tärkeä kaupan keskus, mutta kun Middelzee kuivui 1200-luku|1200-luvulla, se menetti merkitystään. Leuwarden oli kuitenkin yksi Alankomaiden tärkeimmistä kaupungeista aina 1600-luku|1600-luvun puoliväliin asti. Vuonna 1901 kaupungissa oli 32 203 asukasta.
Nykyään Leeuwarden on Friisinmaan pääkaupunki ja sillä on suuri paikallinen merkitys. Kaupungin tärkeitä rakennuksia ovat mm. Kanselarij (kanslerin talo), Waag (vanha kaupänkäynnin keskus) ja vino torni Oldehove. Kaupungissa on Alankomaiden suurimmat karjamarkkinat ja helatorstaina maan suurin kukkatori, ja Leeuwarden on myös pikaluistelukilpailu Elfstedentochtin aloitus- ja lopetuspaikka. Kuuluisa vakooja Mata Hari syntyi Leeuwardenissa.
